Walter I. Cushion, age 70, passed away peacefully on March 11, 2026, surrounded by the family he loved so deeply. He was born September 19, 1955, to Burl and Myrtle Cushion.
Walter was a simple man who found his greatest happiness in the things he loved most — his family, his music, and the outdoors. He had a lifelong passion for bluegrass music and was proud to play in the Unknown Bluegrass Band as well as Andy Lollie and Southern Grass Band. If you knew Walter, you probably knew the sound of his guitar and the joy it brought him and everyone around him.
When he wasn’t playing music, Walter could often be found fishing, running his trout lines, or simply enjoying the quiet moments of life. He was also proud to serve his community as a board member of the Stockton Volunteer Fire Department.
More than anything, Walter was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He shared 42 loving years of marriage with his wife, Sheila Ann Cushion. He was a proud father to Crystal (Curtis) Summerlin and Jessica Cushion, and a especially proud grandfather to Taylor, Kaleb, Corey, and Gunner. Nothing brought a bigger smile to his face than his great-grandchildren, Emersyn and Memphis.
He is also survived by his brother, Dallas (Elaine) Cushion; his sister, Lydia (Kelly) Lyles; and many aunts, nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss him dearly.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Burl and Myrtle Cushion; his grandparents, Scott and Myrtle Whited; his niece, Amber Jaye Haugen; his nephew, Christopher Blake Smith; and his best friend, Arthur Cole Lee.
Walter will be remembered for his kind heart, his love of music, his dedication to his family, and the quiet way he showed up for the people he loved. His memory will live on in every song played, every fishing line cast, and every story shared by those who knew him.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 13, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. at the chapel of Norris Funeral Home with Sister Lousie Parker officiating. Burial will follow at Richerson Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday, March 13, 2026 from 11:00 a.m. until the 1:00 p.m. service at Norris Funeral Home.
