Virginia (Jenny) Hammond, a native of Reform, Alabama and a resident of Bay Minette, Alabama, went to be with her Lord and Savior, on Monday November 2, 2020 at the age of 92. To say she will be greatly missed is an understatement. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Hammond and son Vince Hammond. She is survived by four grandchildren, Dr. Jeffrey Coats (Dr. Rebecca Coats), Kelley Coats Newell (Trent Newell) two great-grandchildren, Coats and Emaline Newell, and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Born in 1928, she was a product of the Depression born in Pickens County, AL. Shortly after WW II, she married her husband Hubert Hammond, who was a Navy medic attached to the Marines who served on Iwo Jima in the Pacific Theater. They were married for 60 years having one son, Dr. Vinson Hammond, who was a world renowned pianist; a graduate of Juilliard and the Manhattan School of Music. Before the bright lights of the city called Vince to New York, he was the drum major as a sophomore in the University of Alabama’s Million Dollar Marching Band.
Jenny was an educator at Faulkner State Community College for 25 years and used to joke that she was brought in with the first load of dirt! She and her husband were true philanthropists who cherished education, and helped to endow scholarship funds at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, and at Faulkner State Community College in Bay Minette.
Jenny was extremely involved in the First United Methodist of Bay Minette. She worked with numerous charities and auxiliaries as an advocate and volunteer within the community where she lived the Wesleyan Creed daily, “Let me do as much good as I can in as many ways as I can for as many people as I can as long as I can.”
Thus epitomizing Jenny’s true philosophy of life!
Loss of a loved one cannot be measured in words or quantum physics for love is not tangible, but abstract. However, so many loved this dear Christian woman and she will forever remain in our hearts. Christos from Alpha though Omega
The funeral service will be held Friday, November 6, 2020 at 3:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with Reverend Marvin Hamilton officiating.
