Peggy Guy Weatherford Middleton, 90 passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her six children on October 10, 2023, in Bay Minette, AL. Peggy was born on January 24, 1933. Her mother’s illness and death brought her to Stockton where she was raised in foster care by Hamp & Ethel Catrett. This instilled in her a desire to help those in need which she did throughout her life. She graduated from Baldwin County High School in 1949. It was there she met and then married Charles Weatherford. Being an only child made Peggy realize the importance of family and she ended up being blessed with six children and a large family.
Peggy was a hard worker and worked until the age of 78. Over her lifetime she had several careers. These careers included working at Brookley Field, Farmer’s Home Administration, and the Bay Minette Housing Authority.
Peggy’s faith in God played a major role in her life. She grew up in the Cottage Hill Presbyterian Church. Later she became a faithful member of Eastwood Baptist Church, and it became her second family. She loved volunteering and bringing her “famous” mac & cheese to church meals. She especially loved working with the children at VBS and taking her grandchildren with her every summer. Attending church was one of the highlights of her week.
Peggy had the biggest heart and the most beautiful smile. She was a private and quiet person, but also very witty and fun! She was fearless and independent, yet sensitive and incredibly compassionate including her love for animals. In her retirement years she didn’t slow down. She spent countless hours volunteering at the North Baldwin Auxiliary, Bay Minette Senior Center, the Bay Minette Public Library, and visiting weekly with the residents of Oakwood Nursing Home.
Peggy was a beautiful person inside and out. She cared so deeply for the people around her. Her family was the joy of her life, and she made spending time with them a priority. She and her children looked forward to their weekly Wednesday lunches and the entire family all 50 of them looked forward to the monthly Sunday dinners at Granny Peggy’s followed by a very competitive game of Scrabble. She made an impact on many lives. She will be forever missed, until we meet again.
She is survived by her children, Mira (Carl) Rietman of Bay Minette, AL, Darlene “Tina” (Bob) McGough of Fairhope, AL, Carol (Feulner) Stuart of Bay Minette, AL, David (Donna) Weatherford of Bay Minette, AL, Hamilton (Scarlet) Weatherford, Sr. of Bay Minette, AL, and Johnathan (Kristy) Weatherford of Bay Minette, AL; grandchildren, Bob Lowe (Lane) McGough of Fairhope, AL, Christina (Clark) Stankoski of Fairhope, AL, Anna Ready of Fairhope, AL, Booker (Becky) Stuart of Bay Minette, AL, Will (Stacy) Stuart of Birmingham, AL, Jo Margaret (Josh) Hall of Dyass, Sarah Weatherford (Vernon) Johnson of Gulf Shores, AL, Lindsey Kate Weatherford of Bay Minette, AL, Hamilton “Hamp” Cole Weatherford, Jr. of Bay Minette, AL, Kenneth Charles Weatherford of Bay Minette, AL, and Johnathan David Weatherford of Bay Minette, AL, and great grandchildren, Charlie, Savannah, Davison, Ford, Colleen, Wills, Mamie Lowe, Emma, Ally, Leah, Ford, Elli, MaKenna, Lizzy, Bentley, Lola, Sonny and William Vernon.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles David Weatherford, Sr. and her second husband James “Preacher” Middleton; her mother, Talithia Elmira Guy; her foster parents, Hamp and Ethel Catrett and a grandson, Charles David Weatherford, III.
