Mary Viola Heathcock Hicks, age 94, a native and resident of Perdido, AL died Sunday, May 30, 2021 at her residence. Affectionately known as Sis. Hicks she died on the land where she was born 94 1/2 years ago. Married to Dempsey Hicks for 61 years they had 6 children, 1 daughter Betty (who they lost at a very young age) and 5 boys. Momma can be remembered best for her love of the Lord, working at Bay Minette Middle School and driving the school bus. She never met a stranger and delighted in inviting them to church and sharing her testimony. She attended Calvary Tabernacle Church in Bay Minette for 42 years which she was instrumental in starting in 1974.
She is survived by her children, Dempsey Wayne (Dorothy) Hicks of Glencoe, AL, James Randy (Belinda) Hicks of Splinterhill, Thomas Darrell (Jean) Hicks of Splinterhill, Bobby Ray (Doris) Hicks of Splinterhill and Robert T. “Bo” (Carolyn) Hicks of Splinterhill; two brothers, Lawrence E. (Margie) Heathcock of Splinterhill and Harold (Ruby) Fretwell of Theodore, AL; one sister, Helen (Jerry) Stewart of Splinterhill; twelve grandchildren; twenty-seven great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren,
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Dempsey Hicks; a daughter, Betty Jean Hicks; her parents, John Chesley and Lavada F. Levins Heathcock; a grandson, Cecil DeWayne Hicks; a great grandson, James Tyler “Ty” Drinkard; two brothers, Leonard E. Heathcock and Curtis James Heathcock and a sister, Lois Marie Spence.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 2, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at the North Main Pentecostal Church in Atmore with Reverend David Cooper, Reverend Perry Pace, Sister Helen Stewart and Reverend Derick Gobier officiating. Burial will follow at Perdido Baptist Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, June 1, 2021 from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at North Main Pentecostal Church in Atmore.
Pallbearers will be Darian Hicks, Brian Hicks, Brent Hicks, Patrick Hicks, Brad Hicks and Pate Robinson. Honorary pallbearers will be her sixteen great grandsons, Ricky Hicks, Joe Hadley and Lorenzo Graham.
