Joseph "Joe" Helmich, Jr. Obituary

Joseph “Joe” Richard Helmich Jr. passed away suddenly but peacefully at his home on Wednesday, July 17, 2024. Joe was born in Mobile, Alabama on June 6, 1967 and attended Shaw High School. He was a skilled and respected millwright and worked at Degussa/Evonik Corporation for 24 years. He was an avid fisherman and had a deep love for Dauphin Island where he spent a lot of his time as a young man and into his adulthood. He relocated from Mobile to Baldwin County (Stockton) to further pursue his love of fishing and the Mobile River Delta. Not long after moving to Stockton, he crossed paths with the love of this life, Jenni. He spent most of his free time with friends and family at “the river” and on Dauphin Island. Joe had an infectious smile and a huge heart. He was loved and admired by countless people he came into contact with over his 57 years here on earth. Joe bravely battled ALS (Lou Gehrig’s) for the last 2 years of his life yet he continued to face everyday with grace and dignity.

He is preceded in death by his father, Joseph Richard Helmich Sr. and his beloved uncle, Leland Leslie Sumrall.

He is survived by his wife, Jennifer “Jenni” Helmich; mother, Jane Sumrall Helmich; brother, Ronald “Ronnie” Helmich; daughter, Victoria Payne (William); beloved granddaughter, Isla Payne, and “bonus” children, Jaden and Jillian Eslava, who he adored and treated as his own. He is also survived by his “perfect” dog Nash who he loved beyond measure.

A casual celebration of Joe’s life is planned for Sunday, August 4, 2024 at 4:00 pm. The event will take place at the Matthews’ Landing pavilion located at 8900 Lower Bryant’s Landing Road, Stockton, AL.
