Joe went home to be with the Lord surrounded by friends and family on August 15, 2024 at the age of 80. He was a loving husband, father, a faithful Christian and a dedicated church worker. He was born in Bay Minette, AL and a long-time member of the Crossroads Church of God. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Arline Daw Davis, one son, Deloit Davis, one brother, Carlton Elijah Davis and one sister, Patricia Howard.
Joe is preceded in death by his parents: Alfred E. Davis and Mary V. Davis. His deceased siblings are: Alford 0. "Obie" Davis, Emily Ann Goram, Marvin "Buster" Davis, Jerry Davis, John Davis, Margaret Cox and Mary Williams Roberts.
Joe was a Licensed Minister of Music in the Church of God as well as a talented writer. He wrote numerous articles for the Clarke County Historical Society Journal and the Mobile County Genealogical Society. He wrote and published several novels, essays and short stories and poetry as well as the History of Crossroads Church of God. He had songs published in the Church of God Convention songbooks and arranged many other songs used for the local choir that he directed for over 15 years
Joe was also a well known educator. His first two years of college were at Lee University where he received an AA degree in 1964. He then went to Jacksonville State University and completed his BS degree in 1966. In 1972 he received his MA degree from University of South Alabama and received an ED. D. degree from Auburn in 1987. As an educator he spent 25 years teaching in public school classrooms in Baldwin and Escambia Counties and then taught part time college classes for a total of 15 years at Pensacola junior College, Lee University, Faulkner University and Jefferson Davis Community College.
Joe was blessed to have Tonia, a devoted caregiver from Aveanna Hospice Service. She went well beyond the call of duty to give the best care and it was greatly appreciated by the family.
The family will receive friends, Friday August 23, 2024 from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM at Crossroads Church of God.
Funeral Service will be at 11:00 AM Saturday morning, August 24, 2024 at Crossroads Church of God with Rev. Richie Nobles officiating. Interment will follow at Crossroads Church of God Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be men of the church.
