John Thomas Salter, age 86, born in Bermuda, AL and a resident of Bay Minette, AL passed away peacefully Friday, July 12, 2024 at Atmore Crowne Nursing Home. He retired as a welder from Scott/Sappi Paper Company after 36 ½ years of service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served on the USS Forrestal for four years. He was also a member of Bay Minette Masonic Lodge #498.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Louise Mattei Salter of Bay Minette, AL; two sons, Travies (Alicia) Salter and Dwight (Deidra) Salter all of Stockton, AL; one stepson, Cary (Kelly) Mattei of Charlotte, NC; two sisters, Elaine Roley of Bay Minette, AL and Faye Parker of Daphne, AL; brother-in-law, Jim (Sharon) Mattei of Bluffton, SC; ten grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; four nephews and one niece.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, John Ezra and Katherine Ryland Salter; his father and mother-in-law, James and Louise Mattei; a granddaughter, Kayla Salter and two brothers-in-law, Buddy Roley and Wayne Parker.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 16, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. at the chapel of Norris Funeral Home with Reverend Larry Beauchamp officiating. Burial will follow at 3:30 p.m. at Pine Crest Cemetery in Mobile. The family will receive family and friends at the house after the service.
A visitation will be held Tuesday, July 16,2024 from 11:00 a.m. until the 1:00 p.m. service at Norris Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Dwight Salter, Dustin Salter, Jonathan Salter, Kevin Salter, J.T. Salter, John Lacy and Paul Faulk.
Although the family will accept flowers, they suggest memorial contributions be made to Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, 3564 Butler Street, Atmore, AL 36502.
The family would like to say a special thank you to the nurses and doctors at North Baldwin Infirmary and Atmore Crowne Nursing Home.
