Ileen "Coot" Smith Obituary

Ileen Smith, affectionately known as Coot or Granny, was a lifelong resident of Bay Minette. Whether you sought her out in the 4th pew at First Baptist Church, engaged in small talk at Dr. Fondren's office, or found her at home with the front door wide open, sitting at the head of the dining room table with a cup of coffee, she always welcomed everyone with open arms. On February 12th, 2024, she departed this world to reunite with beloved family members she had not seen in a while.

She was welcomed by her parents, seven siblings, her son Marvin "Rudy" Smith, eldest daughter Nancy Banks, and dearest friend Ernie Chavis. They had been eagerly anticipating the chance to share an afternoon coffee and all of the local happenings. Granny, who kept a watchful eye for them amongst the red birds, would now be able to see them face to face.

Granny's presence would undoubtedly fill the air with tales of her life events and fond memories. Some of her favorites were when she met Willy Nelson and the journeys to the “museums”.  There was never a dull moment around her; though she may not have caught every word in a conversation, she enjoyed sitting and visiting with anyone willing to share their stories, even if repeated multiple times. She never met a stranger, quickly turning them into family within minutes.

Despite her petite stature, Granny's heart was three times its size, always having room to love anyone who came close to her. Her absence will be deeply felt by many, including her sister Ann Garner of Fairhope, AL, daughters Ellen (Ricky) Williams and Becky (David) Morgan, son-in-law Darren Banks, grandchildren Kristopher (Natasha) Banks, Kendrick (Jessie) Banks, Sidney (Tim) Burnett, Jonathan (Brittany) Hall, Kate Harrison and Melinda Banks, as well as great-grandchildren Hunter Banks, Nicholas Banks, Douglas Banks, Kirkland Banks, Franklin Banks, Briggs Burnett, and Saralynn Black.

For such a petite lady, Granny left an indelible imprint on all of us, and amidst the red birds, we will always find her. She will be greatly missed, but her memory and the love she shared will forever reside in our hearts.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 15, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Chip Starnes officiating. Burial will follow at Bay Minette Cemetery.
