Henry Alfred “Hank” Kontio, Jr. age 90, died Tuesday, November 15, 2022 at William F. Green State Veterans Home. Hank was born in Rockland Maine, graduated from Rockport High School and after a short stint at the University of Maine, Orono where he studied Animal Husbandry, he went to proudly serve in the United States Air Force. Hank served in the Korean War, the Vietnam war, as a crew chief on the SR-71, and multiple other assignments. He concluded his 26 year career with honor.
Hank was proud to play in the Shriner’s band of the Kora Temple which raised money for the Shriners Hospital “we play so kids can walk”. He loved to travel, especially on cruises with his wife, Mary by his side.
Hank was preceded in death by his father, Henry Kontio; his mother Mary Ranta Kontio; a brother David Kontio, and a son Orie A (Charlene) Woods II.
Hank is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mary Rennie Kontio; two sons Mark Kontio and Jeffrey (June) Kontio; a daughter, Kimberly Samry and grandchildren David Kontio, Emily Kontio, Aaron Kontio, Andrew Kontio, Erin Cully, Katie Cully, Megan Cully, Derek (Melissa) Woods, Tiffany Woods, Pamela (Brad) Krisanits, Christopher Samry, Alexa (Benjamin) Redman, and Courtney Samry.
Graveside services and burial will be held Monday, November 21, 2022 at 1:30 p.m. at the Alabama State Veterans Cemetery.
