Commander Dempsey Dean James, fondly known by many as “Jesse James,” passed away peacefully at home on August 22, 2025, in Bay Minette, Alabama, at the age of 85. Born on July 19, 1940, in Mobile, Alabama, he was the son of Delmer and Nellie Keith James.
Commander James proudly served his God and country dedicating 32 years of his life to the United States Navy, where he achieved the rank of Commander. His distinguished career carried him around the world, serving at duty stations including Key West, FL; San Diego, CA; Patuxent River, MD; Quonset Point, RI; Virginia Beach, VA; Campbelltown, Scotland; Sigonella, Sicily; and Pensacola, FL. He also served with honor aboard the USS Intrepid and the USS Independence. Throughout his service, he earned the respect of his shipmates and the gratitude of his nation.
After his retirement, Commander James continued a life of service and fellowship within his community. He was a proud member of the Masons, Shriners, Rotary, and Immanuel Episcopal Church in Bay Minette. His love of history, museums, and world travel reflected his deep curiosity and zest for life. He never met a stranger and was known for his sense of humor, quick wit, and the ability to bring joy and laughter to those around him.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Anita Bloodworth James; children, Jaynee Lynne Vanderheym (Roger) of Australia; Michael Perkins of Creola, AL; Jenny Perkins Kennedy (Ricky) of Leesville, SC; and Jeff Perkins (Aimee) of Bay Minette, AL. He was a proud grandfather to 10 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Anne Harrison Slay (Ron), and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sons Robert Jarvis and Dempsey James Jr., siblings Junior Ray James, Jimmie James, David Harrison, and Darlene Harrison Muench.
A funeral service honoring Commander James will be held Wednesday, August 27, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at the chapel of Norris Funeral Home with Father Michael Ballard officiating. Interment will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery, Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida at 2:00 p.m.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, August 27, 2025 from 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. service at Norris Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Shriners Children's Hosptial.
Commander James will be remembered as a patriot, a loyal friend, and a loving family man who never failed to share a joke, a smile, or a story that brightened the lives of those around him. His legacy lives on in the laughter he inspired, the service he gave, and the love he shared.
