Carrol Chason Obituary

Carrol Anne Hastie Chason passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on Tuesday, June 24, 2025 at the age of 85. Born December 9, 1939 to Joseph H. Hastie, Sr. and Clara Bristow Hastie of Stockton, Alabama, she lived a full and meaningful life centered around family. John Earle Chason, Sr., the man who would become her forever love, came into her life when she was just 14 years old. Carrol Anne and Johnny were sweethearts throughout high school and joined in wedlock just days after her graduation from Baldwin County High School in 1958. Their love story was one that most would say dreams are made of and spanned the better part of 72 years.

Among Carrol Anne's most notable accomplishments was the raising of her three children, Anne, John, and Susan. While the bulk of her time was spent selflessly tending to the needs of her immediate and extended families, she was not one to sit idle. In her free moments, she kept herself busy with many hobbies, exhibiting a talent for creating beautiful things. Hours upon hours were spent fabricating intricate metal floral arrangements, embellishing custom lampshades, hand-painting various china items, and hand-sewing gorgeous heirloom lace dresses alongside the friends she held most dear. When they were not crafting together, you could often find them around one of their kitchen tables laughing, playing cards, and sipping sweet tea. Her focus was always on family and friends, and she truly invested herself in both.

After suffering a massive stroke in 2007 during cancer treatment, Carrol Anne continued to shine her light on those around her. Despite the physical and verbal challenges over the past 18 years, she remained courageous, kind, and full of spunk, perfectly exemplifying how, even in the midst of strife, determination and persistence can lead to a life well-lived.

Someone once said "Death is not the greatest loss there is. The greatest loss is what dies inside of us while we live." Carrol Anne's loss will be deeply felt by her all who loved her, but her memory will continue to live on to spark hope and to inspire strength and resilience in those whose souls she touched throughout her lifetime.

And as the anticipated waves of grief roll in, may we all be reminded of the words of Rossiter W. Raymond... "Death is only the horizon, and the horizon is nothing save the limit of our sight."  While our teary eyes cannot physically see the glorious landscape beyond, if we close them for a moment, we can certainly visualize the joy and freedom she must be experiencing now that she has escaped her earthly bounds. And for that, we give praise.

Carrol Anne is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph H. Hastie, Sr. and Clara Bristow Hastie. She is survived by her husband John Earle Chason, Sr., three children Anne Shepherd (Chuck), John Earle Chason, Jr. (Vivian), and Susan Chambers (Sam), two siblings Clara Hastie Smith (Howard) and Joseph H. Hastie, MD (Jan), seven grandchildren Rachel, Chason, Katelyn, Christine, Mazie, Maggie, and Sam, and two great-grandchildren Hollie and Marley with three more on the way.

A Memorial Service will take place Tuesday, July 1, 2025 at 10:30 a.m. at the Montgomery Hill Baptist Church in Stockton, Alabama with a Celebration of Life Reception immediately following. A private burial will take place prior to the service. Serving as pallbearers will be her beloved nephews, Judson Chason, Wesley Chason, Collin Chason, Will Chason, Andrew Chason, and Matt Achimon, all of whom held a special place in her heart.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Montgomery Hill Memorial Association, c/o John Chason, 400 West Second Street, Bay Minette, Alabama 36507.
